Description: Reading Science
Science for the TASC: Students can learn what they need to know by reading, thereby increasing their reading capacity as they learn science content. In this session, we will review item specifications for science to understand exactly what students need to know for the Life Science portion of the TASC, (50% of the questions). Teaching texts and support activities presented in this session are student-friendly, and develop reading depth and science knowledge.
Reading Visuals
Students encounter illustrations, diagrams, photos, graphs, charts, tables, flow charts, propaganda posters and political cartoons on the TABE and TASC tests. During this session, we will focus on two PD Modules created to help students become familiar and comfortable with “reading” these visual “texts.” The modules help ELA teachers adapt the strategies they use in teaching students to read texts in the service of helping students understand visuals. This training session will bring together two PD Modules: the Visuals Module and the U.S. Timeline Module.
Take Away’s: Research based, tested instructional methods, hands on practice; turnkey curriculum framework
We look forward to your participation.
