Course Description: GRASP (Giving Ready Adults and Home Study Program) is a Distance Learning program designed for adults with a minimum reading NRS level 5 who are seeking a high school equivalency diploma. Students must be able to work independently and devote at least 6 hours per week to studying. Individualized home study packets are delivered twice a month.
This training is for teachers whose program has been approved to offer the GRASP curriculum. Some of the topics that will be covered include: student eligibility, program design and requirements, developing packet materials, and record keeping. Teachers trained to deliver GRASP are required to have classroom teaching experience. NYS teacher certification is required to generate Employment Preparation Education funding.
Training for new teachers is a full day (6 hours); this training is also open to teachers who want a full refresher. Teachers who need recertification can join the session in the afternoon (3 hours).
The morning session (new GRASP teachers) will introduce distance learning and GRASP. This portion of training will cover teacher responsibilities: assignments, student communication, materials, motivation, retention, and a time for questions and answers. The afternoon session will review the GRASP manual including: marketing, assessment, delivery, record-keeping and forms, post testing, student folders and funding.
**New and experienced teachers are encouraged to share ideas and resources in the second portion of training, especially items saved to Google Drive. These items will be shared with other attendees. Include 1) the resource you use; 2) the subject it addresses; 3) a scanned copy, a link, or other example that can be shared electronically. If your items cannot be shared electronically, you are welcome to bring hard copies with you. Participants are encouraged to share ideas that can be stored in the Google Drive in advance with lbargstedt@gmail.com.
