Description:
The Learning to Achieve training curriculum is designed to build teacher effectiveness in providing instruction and support for struggling adult learners, including those with learning disabilities (LD), diagnosed or not. It includes an integrated set of research-based resources and professional development materials. This session will have a corrections focus and is a good fit for teachers, case managers, and program staff. The session includes hands-on practice and activities.
The Learning Disabilities Association of America acknowledges that “The lack of data on the rates of people with learning disabilities in the justice system is particularly a problem, as there is no recent quality data looking nationally at prevalence rates in the justice system”, but cites a statistic that 36% of students included in the juvenile justice system have been diagnosed with LD, inferring that the adult population is probably similar or higher. We all have learners with LD and learners who struggle in our corrections classrooms.
Explicit Instruction for Strategy Learning: This specific module covers how explicit instruction can be used to help adults with LD and all learners develop strategies to learn. Good teaching leads to good learning, and Explicit Instruction is a proven teaching strategy.
